Description of Hiyare Reservoir Rainforest

Hiyare Reservoir Rainforest is a small mysterious rainforest which has been known as an absolute paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. This is one of the best kept secrets of Galle. Hiyare Reservoir Rainforest is a secondary lowland rain forest with a high diversity and endemism of species. The Hiyare reservoir is a natural lake and is the main source of drinking water to the city of Galle.

There are 55 species of dragonflies, of which 12 are found only in the Hiyare area. 78 butterfly species, 55 dragonfly and 118 bird species have been identified with three endemic to this area.Compared to the other national parks in Sri Lanka, Hiyare is more serene and peaceful with a quiet.
